Four people who were on a KLM flight, which also carried a woman who later died of hantavirus in South Africa, have passed through Rome. The news was announced by the Italian Ministry of Health in an official statement, which also emphasizes that the risk of the virus spreading in Europe remains very low.

The Italian Ministry of Health has activated the procedures foreseen for risk assessment, surveillance and health coordination, in accordance with national and international protocols, the statement said.

According to her, joint assessments at the international level by the World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) currently indicate a low risk to the general population globally and very low in Europe.

" Four people have arrived in Italy on the KLM flight in transit to Rome, on which the woman hospitalized in Johannesburg, who later died there, had boarded for a few minutes. The contact details of the four passengers have been obtained ," the Italian Ministry of Health announced.

The Italian Ministry of Health has forwarded the information to the relevant regions, Calabria, Campania, Tuscany and Veneto, to activate active surveillance procedures, in accordance with the principle of maximum caution.

A woman resident in Florence has already been placed in quarantine. The same preventive measure has been taken for a patient in Calabria, but he is asymptomatic, according to local authorities.

"We are awaiting tests to verify the presence of the virus," declared the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani.

Meanwhile, Oceanwide Expeditions has updated the situation regarding the passengers of the MV Hondius. An Italian doctor from the ECDC health staff has been on board the ship since May 6, and has been on board to support emergency assistance activities.
