FBI Director Kash Patel announced today that the federal agency has thwarted a "potential terrorist attack" planned to occur in Michigan over the Halloween weekend by arresting several suspected individuals.
" This morning, the FBI thwarted a potential terrorist attack and arrested several individuals in Michigan who are suspected of planning an attack over the Halloween weekend ," Patel said in a social media post.
The head of the federal police did not provide further details on the identities of the detainees or the exact nature of the plan, but stressed that the operation was successful in protecting public safety. According to reports from CBS News, citing police sources, the attack was "inspired" by the Islamic State (ISIS). The American television network specified that five people, aged between 16 and 20, were arrested in the city of Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit.
At least one of those arrested was linked to a former member of the Michigan National Guard who was arrested in May of this year on charges of planning a terrorist attack on US military facilities in the Detroit metropolitan area.
The FBI had been monitoring an online discussion about the attack for some time, according to US media. CNN reported that members of the group had received training with automatic weapons, such as the AK-47, and had talked about "Pumpkin Day," a symbolic reference to Halloween, as the date chosen for the attack. These online conversations were crucial to the discovery of the plot by federal authorities.
Dearborn police confirmed the arrests in a Facebook post, assuring residents that there is no current threat to the population.
"We assure the residents of our city that there is currently no threat to the population ," said the official statement from the city's police, which has a large Muslim community and is located in a geographically sensitive area.
