Different brothers, Charles and Andrew, close but ultimately very distant. Separated above all by age: the first was born in 1948, the second in 1960, twelve years apart and thus lacking a common childhood.
Then there are their personalities: Charles is as introverted, quiet and intellectual as Andrew is cheerful, charming and committed to action. While the future king devoted himself to Shakespearean theatre in his youth, at the same age his brother went off to the Falklands War, where as a helicopter pilot he won the honours of a national hero.
The relationship with their mother also went their separate ways: while Charles never had a loving parent, the Queen forgave Andrew, her favorite, everything.
There has always been a rumor in London, although it has never been fully confirmed, that Andrew was not actually the son of Prince Philip, while no one doubts Charles' paternity.
His younger brother was second in line to the throne from birth and remained so until William's arrival: if anything had happened to Elizabeth's heir in those years, he would have become king. Andrew was thus Charles' "double" for a long time: even his marriage to Sarah Ferguson, in 1986, echoed that of his brother to Diana.
And it was the Princess of Wales who introduced "Fergie" to her brother-in-law. Likewise, both couples divorced almost simultaneously, in 1996, marked in both cases by mutual infidelity.

In the end, for Charles, his younger brother had become a burden that threatened to bring down the entire monarchy: however, the king hesitated for a long time before cutting the boil, because the fraternal bond was impossible to suppress. And so Andrew, expelled from the Royal Lodge, will move to Sandringham, the king's private estate, where he will pay rent. Buckingham Palace emphasizes that the former prince remains the brother of the sovereign, who will continue to provide for his needs appropriately.
In short, the monarchy is an institution, but it also remains a family (albeit a very dysfunctional one), with all that that entails.
It is no coincidence that Buckingham Palace has emphasized the king's "duty of care" to his family, for which "private factors" have been a critical part of all family considerations.
