Tragedy with 78 victims in the mountain resort, Turkish court sentences 11

A court in Bolu province has sentenced 11 individuals, including the owner of the luxury Grand Kartal Hotel in the Kartalkaya mountain resort, to life in prison after a devastating fire that killed 78 people, including about 30 children, in January last year.

The fire broke out on January 21 at the hotel in northern Turkey, engulfing the entire building in minutes. According to investigations conducted by the authorities, serious violations of safety regulations, along with the malfunctioning of the alarm system on the night of the incident, directly contributed to the magnitude of the tragedy.

In addition to the 78 victims, 137 other people were injured, while entire families disappeared in the flames, leaving a deep wound in the community.

The court hearings took place in the Bolu city gym, where relatives of the victims placed photographs of their loved ones as a painful tribute and a lasting memory. The court's decision was met with loud applause in the hall by family members and the public, who see it as a step towards justice after months of arduous waiting.

In addition to the hotel owner, life sentences were also handed down to the hotel director and several members of the board of directors. A deputy mayor of Bolu and the local fire chief were also sentenced to prison for their negligence in overseeing safety.

The court sentenced a total of 18 other defendants, mostly hotel employees, to sentences ranging from 12 to 22 years in prison. Three people, including two chefs, were acquitted after evidence was presented.
