Tsipras causes shock in Greek left, SYRIZA towards new clash
The developments of recent days in the Greek left camp are accelerating political changes and creating strong tensions within SYRIZA. According to information published by Proto Thema, at least four deputies of the “New Left” party are expected to declare their independence next Tuesday, leading to the dissolution of this force’s parliamentary group.
These are Alexis Haritsis, Efi Achtsioglou, Nasos Iliopoulos and Dimitris Tzanakopoulos, who, according to sources, have coordinated their move through consultations held during the week. It still remains unclear what position MPs Sia Anagnostopoulou and Meropi Tzoufi will take.
These developments come at a time when the creation of the “Alliance of the Greek Left” (ELAS) by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is causing strong vibrations across the left spectrum. It is not only the announcement of the new political entity that has attracted attention, but also the increased activity of Tsipras, who seems to have finally left his party past behind. On June 2, his institute will organize an event on transparency in the use of public funds, while just a few days later, on June 6, SYRIZA will convene its Central Committee in a climate that is expected to be particularly tense.
SYRIZA leader Sokratis Famellos has continued to support the idea of progressive collaborations, including Alexis Tsipras in this perspective. However, many important party figures appear increasingly critical of this approach.
MP Pavlos Polakis was among the first to react publicly, criticizing Famello for the lack of a clear stance following the ELAS announcement. According to party sources, Polakis' camp is expected to demand a complete change in the party's strategy, abandoning the policy of progressive collaborations and focusing SYRIZA on immediate preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Former Minister Nikos Pappas seems to be moving in the same direction, having requested clarifications on the concrete steps taken by the party leadership. He stressed that every political force must prepare for elections, regardless of whether or not it reaches an agreement with potential allies.
Meanwhile, MP Rena Dourou stated that with the official creation of ELAS "there is no longer room for excuses", implying that MPs who are approaching Tsipras' new political project should clearly define their position.
In parallel, discussions are taking place behind the scenes about the possibility of someone other than Sokratis Famellos leading a broader progressive alliance in the future. Among the names mentioned in these talks are former Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and economist Louka Katseli.
According to sources cited by Proto Thema, the balance of power within the SYRIZA Central Committee has changed significantly and does not necessarily favor the current leadership team. Although there is currently no open initiative to oust Famellos, many party leaders believe that the upcoming meeting could turn into a difficult test of his political authority.
