Kuopio, Finland - Walking through a giant sports hall, the threat of World War III seems completely insignificant. However, in addition to hosting children's parties and dance classes, this building has a creepy purpose: it is ready to be transformed into a nuclear fallout shelter at any moment.
The Luola Sports and Activities Center - which means "cave" in Finnish - is carved into a rock in Kuopio, a city just 160 km from the Russian border.
Its vast 13,780 square meter space contains a volleyball court, dance and martial arts studios, gyms, as well as storage rooms filled with helmets, gas masks, and iodine tablets to combat radiation poisoning.
In just 72 hours, Luola is transformed from a public sports facility into an airtight bunker that can protect approximately 7,000 people from missile attacks, chemical and nuclear threats, as well as natural disasters.
The cave is protected by a 20-40-meter-thick rock massif overhead, blast-proof walls, labyrinthine corridors, multi-layered reinforced doors, and a complex air filtration system to block out toxins from the outside. The space for each person in an emergency is just 0.75 square meters. People will sleep on portable three-story beds and use toilets that are essentially plastic buckets.
The bunker opened four years ago and cost around 50 million euros. Residents living nearby automatically purchase their place of residence when they buy an apartment, at a one-time cost of around 1,150 euros per person.
Originally, the rock was excavated to serve as a military workshop for the production and testing of rifles, but it was neglected until the city realized it, purchased it, excavated it further, and developed this sports center.
Luola is just one of more than 50,000 civil defense shelters across Finland. Most are small and built under residential buildings. By law, Finnish developers must build one shelter for every building over 1,250 square meters in size.
However, there are about 100 large-scale centers like Luola across the country. The city of Kuopio has six of them, and in total about 4.8 million people out of Finland's population of 5.5 million have access to a bomb shelter, while those who do not live mainly in rural areas.
