Under protection since 2021, but under surveillance since 2009: before last night's bomb, Sigfrido Ranucci, presenter of the television program Report (Rai3), has been the subject of many threats over the years, and has long been assigned a protection program.
The protection came when a drug trafficker, in contact with the 'Ndrangheta, was intercepted in a plot to kill him. But since 2009 he has had some form of protection.
"I had been under protection since 2009 because the Ercolano family had asked a dangerous person to supervise me. I had carried out an investigation in Sicily into a mine managed by the Catania clan," he himself told the monthly magazine 'Noi antimafia' in May of last year.
The alarm level increased in 2021: "Since mid-August I have been under 24-hour protection. A guy from prison has hired two foreign killers. He is a person who manages drug trafficking, linked to the 'Ndrangheta families. He was also linked to the far right and to Pablo Escobar's Colombian cartel, which had hired two Albanian killers to shoot me," Ranucci told 'Noi Antimafia' in May.
"He did not welcome my investigation into the relationship between politics and organized crime. He was intercepted in the Padua prison. The client is still in prison, but no criminal proceedings have been opened because the killers have not been identified. It is known, however, that they gravitate around the group that killed Fabrizio Piscitelli (the boss known as Diabolik, editor's note). I remember that another trafficker from that area, Selavdi Shehaj, was killed a few steps away from my house, on the beach of Torvaianica."
Even in 2010, "a representative of Santapaola wanted to kill me," Ranucci recounted, "but the murder was stopped by Matteo Messina Denaro, because he did not want to attract the attention of investigators."
In November 2024, Ranucci himself wrote on his Facebook page that the Report editorial team had received "terrible threats" after "reporting on the Israel-Palestine conflict carried out by Giorgio Mottola."
The presenter recalled that he had received various threats recently, ranging from finding two P38 bullets outside his house to being followed by people identified by his escort./ La Republica
