Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded while on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida. In a brief statement posted on social media, the company said an "anomaly" had been recorded during the test launch, stressing that all personnel are safe and accounted for.
Footage of the incident initially shows smoke billowing from the bottom of the rocket, before it was engulfed in a powerful explosion and transformed into a giant fireball.
Florida Rep. Mike Haridopolos, whose district includes Cape Canaveral, stated on X that he had communicated with NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman regarding the incident.
"I am grateful that there were no injuries and thank the emergency crews, engineers and all the teams who responded quickly," Haridopolos wrote.
The explosion is the latest challenge for the space company owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos. Just last month, the New Glenn rocket failed to put a communications satellite into its planned orbit, prompting an investigation.
According to US media reports, video of the incident shows the 98-meter-tall rocket spewing smoke from its base, before exploding and engulfed in huge flames.
Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, Blue Origin's rival company, expressed his regret, calling the incident "very unpleasant."/Corriere della Sera
