David Petraeus says the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine are showing the transformation of modern warfare and that unmanned systems will be the biggest threat of the next decade.
Former CIA director and former US general David Petraeus warned that unmanned systems and autonomous drones will be the biggest military threat of the coming years, while conflicts in Iran and Ukraine are showing how modern warfare is changing.
Speaking at the UBS Asian Investment Conference, Petraeus said the massive use of drones in war zones has shown the serious weaknesses of current air defense systems.
" Everything will be related to unmanned systems and defense against them, which has not been sufficient ," he declared.
Petraeus stressed that Iranian Shahed drones, which cost only $20,000 to $50,000, are being widely used in the Middle East, while defensive missiles costing millions of dollars are often used to shoot them down.
According to him, even a relatively small number of drones have caused serious problems, including disruptions to the production of liquefied natural gas in Qatar.
The former CIA chief warned that the next phase will be even more dangerous: autonomous drones that communicate with each other and operate in swarms, without the need for human control.
" Now you have swarms of drones coming at you and we really have no defense against the swarms ," he said.
Petraeus also mentioned Ukraine's experience, praising Kiev's ability to produce drones and neutralize Russian drones through electronic warfare and interceptor drones.
However, he warned that current defense systems may not be sufficient in the face of coordinated autonomous attacks.
According to Petraeus, the future of warfare will shift from individual autonomous weapons to "autonomous systems of autonomous systems," where sensors, commands, and weapons will operate with almost no human intervention.
He added that this technology will also bring gigantic investments in the defense industry and military technology.
" Autonomy will be the most shocking development of the future ," Petraeus declared.
