US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that Oman will not join Iran in paying for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Asked by reporters if the US was preparing for a war with Oman, Bessent said Donald Trump wanted to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Bessent said he spoke with Oman's ambassador to the US earlier today and that he had assured him that Oman had no intention of imposing a tax.
"The pair discussed the 200 years of good relations between the two countries and how they wanted these relations to continue. I told him that this was an unsuccessful initiative and that he did not want to risk sanctioning Omani individuals or organizations ," he said.
This statement comes after the US president threatened to "blow up" Oman if the latter joined efforts with Iran to exercise unilateral control over the strait.
