United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced tough measures against Iranian airlines today as part of “Operation Economic Fury.” The measures aim to restrict Iranian airlines’ access to international infrastructure, but with a clear exception for travelers going on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
During a press conference at the White House, Bessent stated that Washington will effectively close Iranian airlines' access to landing points, refueling and ticket sales globally.
He emphasized that the United States cannot directly ban the operations of Iranian airlines outside its territory, but the secondary sanctions mechanism aims to create strong indirect pressure on international partners, forcing them to choose between cooperating with Iran or maintaining financial and trade ties with the US.
" Iranian airlines will face strict restrictions. Any airport, fuel supplier or agency that provides services or accepts landing fees from them will be exposed to secondary US sanctions ," Bessent said.
However, the US administration has made an important exception for humanitarian and religious reasons. Bessent stressed that the measures will not apply to Iranians traveling to Saudi Arabia to perform the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
"We respect the religious dimension of the journey to Mecca. Iranian Muslim pilgrims will be exempt from these restrictions during the Hajj period, " he declared.
