David Sánchez is accused of illegal appointment to a public office, while the socialist government faces a series of investigations into corruption and misuse of funds.

The brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez appeared in court on Thursday, becoming the first relative of a sitting prime minister in Spain's democratic history to face criminal charges.

David Sánchez, artist also known as David Azagra, is accused of influence peddling and favoritism in his 2017 appointment to a cultural leadership position in the province of Badajoz.

Prosecutors say he was illegally selected because of his family ties to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. He is on trial alongside 11 other people, including former local socialist leaders.

Defense lawyers have described the charges as politically motivated and have requested that the case be dismissed.

The process comes at a very difficult time for Pedro Sánchez, who is facing a wave of corruption scandals that are hitting the Socialist Party (PSOE).

Just a few days ago, police raided the Socialists' headquarters in Madrid as part of an investigation into the illegal use of party funds.

Also at the center of the investigation is former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, a close ally of Sánchez, suspected of involvement in a corruption network related to a 53 million euro bailout for the airline Plus Ultra during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, important PSOE figures are being investigated for bribery in public contracts, while names close to the government are accused of using public funds and interfering in judicial investigations.

Pedro Sánchez's wife has also been under investigation since 2024 for matters related to her professional activities.

Despite the political crisis, Sánchez continues to deny the allegations and describes some of the investigations as "political farces."
