BoA does not change the base interest rate, Sejko: Inflation increase due to oil

The Supervisory Council of the Bank of Albania decided to keep the key interest rate unchanged at 2.5%, assessing that the current monetary policy orientation remains appropriate to guarantee the return of inflation towards the target in the medium term.

At the meeting held on Wednesday, the Bank of Albania noted that inflation increased during the second quarter of the year, while the Albanian economy continued to expand and financial markets remained stable.

Governor Gent Sejko stated that average consumer price inflation reached 2.9% during April and May, up from 2.5% in the first quarter.

According to the Bank of Albania, the increase in inflation was mainly influenced by the increase in oil prices in international markets, which was reflected in fuel prices in the country. At the same time, the prices of unprocessed foods and some services with high energy cost intensity also increased.

The decision to leave the key interest rate unchanged reflects the Bank of Albania's assessment that current monetary conditions support price stability, while maintaining the balance between controlling inflation and supporting economic activity.
