Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old lawmaker, was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, becoming the city's first Muslim mayor and the first mayor from South Asia.

Mamdani is also the city's youngest mayor in more than a century, marking a major turning point for American politics. He is of South Asian descent: his mother is Indian, while his father is from Uganda, where he was born.

His political career began simply, as an unknown state representative, but he quickly gained attention thanks to the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, supported by figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Although Barack Obama did not officially endorse him, Mamdani took advantage of the new spirit seeking change within the Democratic ranks, winning the election against the traditional establishment.

His victory is considered a historic moment for diversity and political representation in the US, while many analysts describe him as "the new face of urban and progressive America."

The 34-year-old self-proclaimed democratic socialist was relatively unknown just a few months ago and swept to victory on promises to tax millionaires to pay for expanded social programs.

"In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light," Mamdani says in a victory speech outlining his policies as he challenges President Trump.

Democrats have achieved a historic triple-A victory in key elections on Election Day, November 4. Democrats are projected to win the gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey.

Also today, Californians voted to redraw the state's congressional districts in favor of the Democratic Party ahead of next year's elections.

A day earlier, President Trump threatened to cut federal funding to New York if Mamdani wins over independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

The election was seen as the first major electoral test of Donald Trump's second presidency. In a social media post tonight, he blamed the Republican losses on the government shutdown and his own absence from the vote.
