Opposition alliance, Sejamini: The DP and new parties must make concessions!
Neritan Sejamini

Journalist and analyst Neritan Sejamini has listed two conditions that, according to him, could occur for a great unification of the people in Albania. He emphasized that one of the main factors that has historically created large opposition coalitions in the country is related to electoral arithmetic and adaptation to the electoral system.

"In Albania, for better or worse, there has been a tradition of grand coalitions and this tradition of grand coalitions has been built on the logic of numbers, to adapt to the electoral system, especially the one that was before the recent changes and this kind of experience has it. We unite because they gather numbers. The second is that we have some new parties that rationally want to increase their electorate and rationally think about certain strategies. There are new parties, for example, that want to get votes from the DP and merging with the DP does not interest them much because their hope, in terms of the type of electorate, of the people that they can approach, may be people who may be disappointed with the Democratic Party and rather than vote or go to another party, each of these is trying to gather this electorate that is not of the Democratic Party. So, in a way, there is a necessity of numbers and this is the tradition to unite numbers for "an electoral arithmetic, in the conditions we are in, and this is necessary because if the opposition is fragmented as we are today, the chances of winning in the elections, whether local or general, are minimal ," said Sejamini, on "A2CNN".

He added that today the situation is more complex due to the presence of several new parties, which have their own electoral strategies and interests. According to him, these entities aim to increase their voter base, also targeting voters from the Democratic Party.

Sejamini underlined that in order to achieve a broad coalition, the rational self-interest of not only small parties but also of the large party must be overcome, which, according to him, often sees allies only as numbers.

" The other thing is that new parties were born to become stronger and some of these parties have emerged from other parties or are people who have been, Mr. Lapaj, Mr. Shehaj and others have been involved in other specific movements and have their own personal identity, their own electoral identity and they try to use the rational logic of numbers in this type of scheme, that is, to collect as many as possible. Therefore, in order to achieve a coalition, this rational self-interest of political factors must be overcome, but also of the large party that loves the small ones only for numbers. And what is positive in the initiative of the group represented by Mr. Hasimja is that they must find unity on some issues that unite them and instead of saying we are uniting because we are forming a coalition, you are saying "we are creating a project, which aims at 3-4 things, then if we want to conceive after these 3-4 objectives are achieved we can do whatever you want. And that's the only way there can be some kind of unification. The principle of unification is that these ideas of red lines and these things have to go away.

Now it has become like a banal political cliché. Everyone talks about the red line. Sometimes we embrace some cliché in expression which becomes our mental cliché. So, if we talk about red lines, in a way we are creating some mental barriers. If you are going to unite for a certain thing, the first thing you will do is be open that you can unite. Then, in the end you may not unite at all, but the first thing is to say “there are no conditions, let's sit down once, let's get to know each other, let's discuss, let's see where we are, where we are not and then in the end there is no need to say in advance that this is the red line”. Without the need to be arrogant, without the need to be smarter than others, more capable than others, more honest than others. To unite there are two important elements. It takes humility to accept that we are all important to each other. Second, you have to be open-minded because sometimes you can be disappointed with how easily you can find the language. You can be disappointed that something can actually be created. If you don't set out with humility and an open mind to have these discussions, there is no unity ," Sejamini added.
