United States President Donald Trump has said that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, "should be very worried," at a time when diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran appear to be heading for failure.
The statement was made during an interview with NBC News, as Trump responded to a reporter's question about the current situation and the risk of military escalation between the two countries. "They are negotiating with us," Trump said, without providing further details on the nature or progress of these talks.
During the interview, the journalist also raised the issue of Iranian anti-regime protesters, who reportedly feel betrayed by the US president, despite Trump's previous support for them. Trump has previously stated that he has encouraged protests against the Iranian regime and has claimed that thousands of protesters have been killed, while he himself has stopped the planned execution of about 800 others.
“We support them,” Trump said, adding that the current situation in Iran is a direct result of American actions. “This country is in a mess right now because of us. We went in and destroyed their nuclear program,” he declared, referring to the US attacks on two Iranian nuclear facilities last June, during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel.
Trump repeated his claim that Iran's nuclear program has been completely destroyed. Asked what is currently being negotiated if - according to him - Iran no longer has a functioning nuclear program, the US president replied that Tehran is trying to rebuild it in other countries.
According to Trump, any attempt by Iran to rebuild its nuclear capabilities would be grounds for new military strikes by the United States, leaving open the possibility of further escalation of the conflict.
