At least two children and an adult have died in a serious road accident that occurred in the village of Vogelwaarde, in the Dutch province of Zeeland.
According to local authorities, the accident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. on a bend in the N290 road, when a BMW collided with a group of cyclists. The group included 14 children and two supervisors, who were traveling to a school camp.
As a result of the collision, two children and one adult died at the scene. Four other children suffered serious injuries and were transported for treatment to Ghent University Hospital, Antwerp University Hospital and Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.
The school has notified the other students in the group, as well as their parents and guardians, about the incident.
Police have arrested one person in connection with the accident and have appealed for witnesses to come forward to assist with investigations.
Seven ambulances, three trauma helicopters and a police helicopter were deployed to the scene. Several firefighting vehicles, including two fire engines, a rescue vehicle and a support vehicle, were also deployed to the scene.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
