Prime Minister Edi Rama has warned of tougher penalties for those who intentionally cause fires. Rama even said that the penalties for arsonists should be more severe than for those who build without permits.
The Head of Government made the statements during the presentation of measures for the protection of the territory.
"Penalties for arsonists should be more severe than those for illegal construction. It is not possible to punish a fire like the one in Gramsh with 3-8 years and an illegal construction in a protected forest area with 5-10 years. Illegal construction can destroy it, while it takes years for forests to regenerate."
Arsonists should be treated as murderers and deliberate arson should be punished the same as murder.
"In conditions where the heritage of many tribes is melted away within 2 or three nights and people's lives are put at risk, while along with the forest, the house also disappears. This is premeditated murder," said Rama.
