Citizens, activists and environmentalists have gathered again in Tirana to protest against the planned tourist project in Zvërnec. The rally comes after the protest held on Sunday in the capital and on Saturday in Zvërnec, where tensions were recorded between protesters and employees of a private security company.
For the second day in a row in Tirana, thousands of citizens have risen up in protest against the tourist project planned to be built in Zvërnec. Initially gathering in front of the Ministry of Interior, the protesters have started marching towards the Prime Minister's Office, in what is considered one of the largest citizen reactions in recent days.
Holding banners and chanting against the project, citizens are demanding the cancellation of the investment, which the government says is worth 4 billion euros. Protest organizers say the opposition is not about economic development or foreign investment, but about protecting one of the country's most sensitive natural areas.
Protesters' banners read messages such as "Albania is not for sale", "Cancel the project", "Zvërneci is not affected", while there is no shortage of messages against the political class. Some citizens have chosen to express their dissatisfaction with the entire political spectrum with the slogan "Rama in prison, Berisha in prison".
Unlike traditional protests organized by political parties, today's rally has brought to the square citizens of different ages, environmental activists, youth, and family members, who have declared that they are protesting for the protection of public interest and natural resources.
The mobilization comes at a time when the debate over the Zvërnec project has become one of the most discussed topics in the country. The controversy intensified after the protest held on Saturday in Zvërnec itself, where there were tensions and clashes between protesters and employees of a private security company. Footage of the incident was widely shared on social media and prompted numerous public reactions.
Today's protest also follows the rally held the day before in Tirana, where thousands of citizens marched from the Tirana Police Directorate to the Ministry of Interior and then to the Prime Minister's Office. Organizers say the high turnout over the past two days shows that opposition to the project is taking on broader dimensions than a local debate about Zvërnec.
Meanwhile, the government continues to defend the investment, calling it the largest tourism project in Albania's history, with a significant impact on the economy, employment and tourism development. But for the protesters, the issue is not economic. They argue that development cannot come at the expense of protected areas and demand that the project be stopped before its implementation begins.
As the march continues towards the Prime Minister's Office, organizers have warned that the protests will not stop and that civic opposition will continue in the coming days.
