During the summer, due to tourist movements and high temperatures, a significant increase in cases of viral infections, both of the digestive system and of the respiratory tract, has been observed.
The Head of the National Emergency, Skënder Brataj, in an interview for the "Aldo Morning Show" emphasized that medical teams are engaged until September 30 to deal with the numerous cases.
"We are engaged with emergency teams until September 30. Of course, it is seasonal diseases that are the most frequent. Let's not forget this year the fires that have also engaged our teams a lot. Viruses are present all the time and the viruses are the same, it's not like they change. As symptoms, if we start from the mildest to the most severe, they are the same, but if we make a classification, we divide them into upper respiratory viruses, respiratory and lung viruses, digestive system viruses, toxins and bacteria. These are the causes of such conditions and from the statistics until the 24th, there were 61-62 thousand visits made, of which in the first place were gastroenteritis with about 15% caused by viruses and respiratory with about 10%", he said.
The head of emergency services stressed that with the approach of the autumn season, another wave of seasonal diseases is expected, including influenza A and B, which this year may be more aggressive due to a new subtype of the virus, already present in many countries around the world, where it has caused an increase in infected and hospitalized cases. In this context, Brataj appealed for increased care, especially for children and the elderly, who are the most vulnerable to complications brought by the flu.
Brataj also said that protective measures such as personal hygiene, ventilation of closed spaces and avoidance of close contact in high-risk environments are necessary. But above all, he stressed the importance of flu vaccination as the most effective way to prevent the spread and protect public health.
"Now we are expecting influenza A and B. We can prevent it through hygiene, ventilation of the premises and especially the influenza vaccine. Children are the most exposed and the elderly, so they should get the vaccine, because they are more vulnerable. It is more harmful to children, because it causes damage to the bronchi. If we move on to bacteria, which have been more present this summer, especially with diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. The flu is expected to start at the end of October. We must bear in mind that this year's flu will be a little more aggressive than last time, because there is a new subtype, which is demonstrating in half the world an increase in the number of infected and hospitalized people. We must be very careful. Any age can get the vaccine to be protected ," he concluded.
