The conflict over the occupation of a piece of land is suspected to be the cause of the double injury in Saranda.
According to Shqiptarja.com sources, it is reported that the two injured men from Kamza owned a plot of land in Saranda, along the coastline, adjacent to the property of two brothers who are accused as the suspected perpetrators of the incident, Ramadan Canaj, 43, and Erjon Canaj, 35.
The injured Gëzim Hoxhaj, 32, and Ernest Lama, 24, both from Kamza, claimed that the two Lama brothers had occupied part of their land. They had requested a meeting to clarify the situation.
The parties met yesterday afternoon (July 17, 2025), but the situation got out of control to the point of using weapons. According to the police, who have analyzed security camera footage, one of the Canaj brothers shot two young men from Kamza, leaving them injured. Gëzim Hoxhaj and Ernest Lama initially received treatment at the Saranda Hospital and were then sent for treatment to the Trauma Hospital in Tirana.
Meanwhile, the two brothers suspected of being the perpetrators fled the scene and are wanted.
Another lead being investigated by the blue uniforms is related to a conflict that is thought to have initially started between two minor children, and then escalated to include adults, until the situation ended with the use of a firearm.
At the scene, police also found a bag containing a pistol. The gun has not yet been identified. Four spent shell casings were also found at the scene.
The two Canaj brothers, who have been declared wanted, are persons with previous criminal records.
Ramadan Canaj, according to media reports, has previously been convicted in Greece for murder and illegal possession of weapons and is currently on trial in Saranda for "assault in the line of duty." His brother, Erjon Canaj, raped a guard at the Saranda hospital in December 2022, and was arrested in his apartment in February 2024 with 2 pistols.
