The United States of America, through its Chargé d'Affaires in Tirana, Nancy VanHorn, considers the fight against criminal organizations and drug trafficking as one of the top priorities for the US and Albania.
VanHorn said that those who want to see Albania continue the fight against crime and corruption, including international partners, are very interested in this process and will follow it closely. The diplomat emphasized that the United States expects integrity in the selection of the new Special Prosecutor; just as we expect for the selection of the next Director of the BKH.
"The fight against criminal organizations and drug trafficking is among the highest priorities for the United States and Albania, as both undermine global security, pose risks to the safety and well-being of our citizens, and threaten stability worldwide," VanHorn said at the OSCE regional conference "The Linkage between Illicit Drug Trafficking and Violent Crime: Recent National and Regional Trends and Threats."
The American diplomat further stated that Balkan criminal groups are even close to America, as they are increasingly involved in cocaine trafficking from South America.
"As investigations have shown, Albanian criminals collaborate with South American cartels, cartels that President Trump has designated as terrorist organizations; they are groups that flood the United States and Europe with illegal drugs.
Crime and illegal drugs threaten our national security, and President Trump has demanded that every policy and aid dollar advance the national security interests of the United States,” she said.
The diplomat emphasized that President Trump has also instructed our government to work towards the complete elimination of organized crime groups, and this is our focus.
"To achieve this, we will deepen cooperation with governments that match this level of focus and commitment. Our work will be based on concrete shared interests, not empty phrases or ideology, as Secretary Rubio has emphasized."
“Our law enforcement programs in the Balkans emphasize results and burden-sharing, reflecting our “America First” foreign policy. I want to emphasize that “America First” is not “America alone.” If we could fight organized crime and narcotics alone, we would not be here today, working towards a regional solution,” VanHorn said.
