Former President Ilir Meta is expected to appear today at 10:00 at SPAK, where he will give his testimony regarding the violent events of January 21, 2011. During the opposition protest at that time, in front of the Prime Minister's Office building, four protesters were killed.
Meta himself has addressed SPAK with a request to be summoned and to provide explanations on this issue, stating that, due to the functions he has held over the years, he has information that can help the investigation. Within the framework of this file, SPAK has previously received the testimonies of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, former President Bamir Topi, as well as several other officials.
January 21
The events of January 21 are related to the protest held in front of the Prime Minister's Office, during which protesters Ziver Veizi, Faik Myrtaj, Hekuran Deda and Aleks Nika were killed, who were shot dead by the Republican Guard.
This protest erupted after the publication of a compromising video involving then-Deputy Prime Minister Ilir Meta and former Minister Dritan Prifti.
The video, which lasted about 12 minutes, showed a conversation between Meta and Prifti, discussing a financial agreement of 700 thousand euros, related to the granting of concessions and licenses for a hydroelectric power plant. The publication of this video caused strong public and political reactions, culminating in the tragic protest of January 21.
The investigation into this matter was reopened by SPAK in July of last year, after the registration of criminal proceedings for several serious offenses, including murder under qualifying circumstances, committed in collaboration and in a manner dangerous to the lives of many people, abuse of office, and obstruction of justice.
So far, several key figures from that period have been summoned for questioning in the framework of this investigation. Among them are former Interior Minister Lulzim Basha and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha. Also, just a few days ago, former President Bamir Topi testified before SPAK.
The events of January 21, 2011 constitute one of the most serious episodes in the history of the Albanian political transition, where the clash between protesters and the security forces ended with four victims. The case has gone through several stages of investigation and trial over the years, while with the creation of SPAK it has been reopened as part of the investigations into suspected crimes.
