Sali Berisha's unrivaled race, Ervin Salianj's moves, and the challenges of the DP facing the 2027 elections were commented on by Andi Mustafaj, former head of Brain Gain in the DP and former head of the DP campaign in the past elections.
He argued that the problem was not the system, but the fact that many Democrats chose to complain on social media rather than through voting.
"There was a choice, so the member had the opportunity to choose no or abstain. Is it a perfect system? No, but it is the most perfect system we had because this highlighted the lack of voting culture and civic culture, and this is a disaster for the DP and for Albania. There were many reactions on Facebook. I saw people who were against it but did not honor either the DP or Albania by not voting and not expressing "no" and by raising awareness of the role of the vote. The former candidates should have done this too. Imagine if 10,000 people had gone to vote no. If those against Berisha were to impose the vote strength ratio, they would be doing honor to the DP and Albania. I hope that next time people will take the fate of their vote into their own hands ," said Mustafaj.
Mustafaj said that any criticism of the leadership should come with concrete proposals and be articulated initially within the party structures. According to him, Salianji has not presented a clear political platform that would justify movements outside the DP structures.
"Any movement or any opinion against, you will not hear me saying that I am against. I have also had agreements but I have expressed them within the structures. I still find it difficult to understand as a democrat what proposal was made by Salianji that caused his appearance with meetings outside the structures using the DP logo and symbols. I find this unclear. If he were to come with concrete proposals and all of them would have been rejected, then a kind of legitimacy arises to do something. It is not enough to say 'I have said that the party should be opened'. These are general things. One must come with concrete proposals to the leadership and the chairman. If they are rejected, the right arises, but if you have not tried to change the party from within, you do not have the right to make such movements," said Mustafaj.
Mustafaj spoke about the professionalization of the party, structural reform, a digital platform and a new approach towards the diaspora, while emphasizing that "the DP must shrink before it expands."
"The DP needs to improve. We need to have a structural reform that is essential. As far as I know, some changes will be announced at the national assembly, such as the digital platform and the change in approach to the diaspora. The party needs to be professionalized. We have reached a stage where we have a complete system in front of us and professional structures are needed. The DP needs to shrink before it expands. Performance evaluation is also essential," said Mustafaj.
