The uncle and wife of Aleks Nika, one of the victims of January 21, have sent an open letter with strong notes of concern to the head of the EU delegation in Tirana, Silvio Gozato.
In this letter provided by Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu, the Nika family says that after sixteen years we are not seeing any progress in the investigation of this cruel murder.
"Months and months have passed, it has been 3 years since SPAK officially launched the investigations. To our surprise, with the exception of a few routine news about calling some witnesses, we do not see any other actions to re-evaluate known facts, to uncover new facts such as those directly related to the murder of Aleks Nika.
With great regret, but also with legitimate indignation, we have concluded that SPAK is having trouble dealing with January 21. Our laborious effort at the Strasbourg Court to bring the issue back to Albania with its true name - state murder - is not finding the same reaction in the highest investigative institution that has been tasked by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Albania to investigate the chain of command and ordering of the murders on the boulevard.
SPAK's actions are slow, when they should be offensive, as emphasized in the Nika family's open letter to Ambassador Gonzato, whom they request to meet.

Open letter to
Head of the Delegation of the European Union
Lezha, on 25/05/2026
Mr. SILVIO GONZATO
We who are writing to you are residents of Lezha, citizens of a country that aspires to become part of the European family.
Our names are Mark Nika and Rajmonda Nika, respectively the uncle and wife of Aleks Nika, the only son of the family who was killed on January 21, 2011 by the Republic Guard on "Dëshmorët e Kombit" Boulevard, opposite the Prime Minister's Office, leaving two minor daughters orphaned.
A life lost in the prime of life, simply because he was exercising a democratic and legal right to protest against a government scandal, has been and remains a great tragedy for our family. Combined with the three other people killed and dozens injured that day on the boulevard, it has been and remains a state crime, an open wound not only for the family, but for the entire Albanian society.
Because, Honorable Ambassador, after sixteen years we are not seeing any progress in the investigation of this cruel murder. Justice for the murder of Aleksi and for the other murdered was not done. It continues not to be done. In our assessment, at least for these murders, justice was and remains to this day bowed to politics.
State prosecutors, aware of the crime, bowed their heads and continued to ignore the disappearance of evidence. Investigations into Aleks's murder were avoided for years and years with all sorts of excuses and delays without any legal or factual basis. Zero hope for us to find even a little peace.
Faced with this terrible situation, we as a family continued our efforts with determination. We turned to the Strasbourg Court, we patiently awaited the response of this honorable court, which, by decision, qualified the murder of Aleks Nika and three other protesters as state murder. After that, the Supreme Court of Albania also recognized the definition of the murders and injuries of January 21 as a state crime and charged the special prosecutor's office, SPAK, to investigate the case on its merits, with priority given to the murder of Aleks, which remained unpunished.
We were filled with hope that justice would finally be done.
Months and months passed, it has been 3 years since SPAK officially launched the investigation. To our surprise, with the exception of a few routine news reports about the summoning of some witnesses, we do not see any other actions to re-evaluate known facts, to uncover new facts, such as those directly related to the murder of Aleks Nika.
With great regret, but also with legitimate indignation, we have concluded that SPAK is having trouble dealing with January 21. Our laborious effort at the Strasbourg Court to bring the case back to Albania with its true name – state murder – is not finding the same reaction in the highest investigative institution, which has been tasked by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Albania to investigate the chain of command and ordering of the murders on the boulevard.
SPAK's actions are slow, when they should be offensive.
How to uncover and punish the state crime, which was born uncovered, in front of the cameras. How to fulfill an act of justice that does not only belong to us as a family, but to the entire Albanian public, because unexplained and unpunished state murders are murders that continue for the whole of society.
As if to give us some satisfaction for our long wait.
The tragic case cries out for justice.
Dear Ambassador,
We have many things to say about this tragedy and the investigation of this matter, but unable to address them in this letter, we would ask you, within your possibilities and diplomatic ethics, to allow us a meeting at a convenient time.
Hoping that you will consider our request, we convey our highest consideration to you.
