British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the 6-hour operation in the English Channel waters has dealt another blow to Russia and Putin.
British armed forces have detained an oil tanker suspected of being part of Russia's so-called "shadow fleet" in the waters of the English Channel.
The news was announced by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who described the operation as another blow to Moscow.
"This successfully completed operation delivers another strong blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine that we will not allow them to hide," Starmer wrote on the social network X.
The operation, which was carried out in coordination with French authorities and lasted around six hours, involved Royal Marines commandos, specialist agents from the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Royal Air Force (RAF) personnel boarding the vessel to carry out the checks.
According to the maritime monitoring platform MarineTraffic, the ship named Smyrtos sails under the flag of Cameroon and is currently anchored in the English Channel. The British Ministry of Defense announced that the ship will be kept under observation near the southern coast of England while investigations continue.
According to British authorities, Russia uses a network of more than 700 tankers known as the “shadow fleet” to evade international sanctions on its oil exports. These ships transport about 75 percent of Russian oil that is subject to sanctions.
The British Defense Minister described this fleet as a vital resource for the Kremlin and emphasized that London has imposed sanctions on more than 500 ships so far.
The British sanctions ban these ships from entering UK ports and prohibit British companies or individuals from providing financial, insurance or brokerage services to ships carrying Russian oil.
Bukur, shume bukur! Putana ruse po terbohet nga zemerimi! ;)
