The incident in Zvërnec continues to produce reactions in Greece. Following the statements of Greek officials and Athens' continued interventions in the debate on the tourist project, Greek MEP Afroditi Latinopoulou has also taken to the stage, demanding the expulsion of the Albanian ambassador from Greece.
Speaking to Greek television SKAI, the leader of the "Voice of Reason" party described the situation as unacceptable and demanded a harsh reaction from the Greek authorities.
" The government must speak seriously, seriously, openly, publicly and in a pan-European manner regarding the expulsion of the Albanian ambassador ," she declared.
Latinopoulou did not stop at the incident in Zvërnec. She also attacked Prime Minister Edi Rama, citing his electoral activities in Greece and claiming that they have caused negative reactions in Greek public opinion.
" You have to tell me if there is a Greek now who feels proud of Rama's statements. Do you think we feel proud when we see Rama come in and make noise in our country, give election speeches and rallies? " said the MEP.
The statements come at a time when the Zvërnec issue has crossed the boundaries of a local debate and has become a topic of Greek politics. What is striking is the fact that an investment and a clash that occurred on Albanian territory are being accompanied by continuous reactions from Athens, prompting questions about the extent of the interest of Greek politics in an issue that concerns Albanian institutions.
While Albanian authorities are handling the incident according to legal procedures, calls for diplomatic pressure on Tirana continue in Greece, turning Zvërnec into another political clash point between certain Greek circles and Albania.
