The Mediterranean on the verge of a collision? The alliance that alarms Turkey
Erdogan and Trump

Israeli officials call Ankara's rhetoric "unbearable." The Israel-Greece-Cyprus alliance in the Mediterranean is considered a "strategic problem" for Turkey, Trump can restrain Erdogan, but so far he is acting cautiously...

Israel and, especially, Benjamin Netanyahu, have recently been at the center of Recep Tayyip Erdogan's agenda almost every day, due to the numerous operations and fronts that Tel Aviv has opened in the Middle East against states and organizations with which Ankara maintains close relations.

After having on various occasions described attacks on targets in Iran, Palestine, and the West Bank as strikes against the entire Muslim world, Erdogan escalated his rhetoric again this week, declaring that Israeli actions in Syria and Lebanon pose a direct threat to Turkey.

The Turkish president's statement comes at a time when relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv continue to deteriorate, as the interests of the two countries clash on a number of important geopolitical fronts, from Syria to the Eastern Mediterranean.

For his part, Benjamin Netanyahu did not remain silent and reacted with harsh language, describing the Turkish president as an "anti-Semitic dictator" who "should not give moral lectures to Israel."

Meanwhile, in the middle of this clash stands Donald Trump, who, while maintaining good (if occasionally tense) relations with both leaders, was asked at the White House if he was worried about a possible confrontation between Ankara and Tel Aviv. Trump avoided a direct answer, saying that he had not heard the latest statements by Erdogan, whom he called a “very good friend” and “great leader,” adding that “nothing will happen with Turkey, because I respect him and he respects me.”

Relations between Turkey and Israel are at their lowest point in two years, and Erdogan's recent statements are seen by analysts as a new step towards escalation. Although the two countries are not in military conflict, the clash of interests is becoming increasingly apparent.

" We are in a situation of constant conflict. Turkey poses a very big challenge for Israel ," an Israeli source told the N12 television network, adding that Turkish rhetoric has now exceeded the limits of a normal diplomatic confrontation.

"It has become unbearable," he said.

The same source estimates that Ankara does not want a direct military clash with Israel, especially as a NATO member, but has other means of pressure at its disposal.

These developments are directly related to the strengthening of relations between Israel, Greece and Cyprus. At the end of 2025, the leaders of the three countries met in Israel and announced the further deepening of political and defense cooperation, a development that Ankara is following with great concern.

"Turkey is realizing that the architecture that is being formed in the Eastern Mediterranean after the war is a mechanism that is being used against it. For this reason, it is trying to demonstrate its strength in the region," the expert said, describing the trilateral alliance as a "strategic problem" for Turkey.

However, the Israeli source stressed that no military escalation is expected on any of the fronts.

"If we consider the spectrum of opportunities and risks, it is greater in the Eastern Mediterranean than in Syria and Lebanon ," he said.

According to the same source, it is precisely on this front that there is the greatest possibility that a mistake or unexpected incident could lead to an escalation of tensions.

Erdogan's ambitions and the Trump factor

In recent years, Erdogan has sought to transform Turkey into a dominant regional power. In this context, Israel is seen by Ankara as a rival, but also as a means to strengthen Turkey's geopolitical position.

"It is part of Turkey's policy to differentiate itself from other Arab countries and present itself as the most decisive and active state against Israel," Goren said.

He explained that this strategy aims to strengthen Turkey's position in the region. At the same time, Erdogan's statements are also aimed at his voters at home, most of whom hold hostile attitudes towards Israel.

At the same time, the relationship between Ankara and Washington also plays an important role. According to Israeli assessments, Erdogan's position is strengthened by the good relations he maintains with US President Donald Trump.

"Erdogan depends heavily on the Americans. The source of his strength is the trust that Trump shows him," the Israeli source said.

He assessed that the Turkish leader's rhetorical escalation will continue, but will not necessarily lead to real policy change.

"The Americans can easily limit the harshness of Turkish rhetoric. But as long as they do not set red lines, the intolerable rhetoric will continue and intensify," he said. /Adapted from Pamphlet /
