The citizens' protest has been accompanied by revolt, anger and dissatisfaction with the country's government. Although the rally was prompted by opposition to the Zvërnec project, the protesters expanded the cause by demanding the repeal of the law on strategic investments and the cancellation of the Mountain Package.
The protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office for Zvërnec has ended after more than 3 hours. Another rally has been announced for tomorrow at 6:00 PM, where the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama is demanded.
In the call "even more tomorrow", the protesters have vowed not to leave the square until their demands are met. Zvërnec was the spark, but they have also put forward a number of other demands such as the cancellation of the Mountains Package and the repeal of the law and status related to strategic investments.
The mobilization could take on broader dimensions, including other issues that affect the public interest. It remains to be seen whether the causes of protest will expand.
During the rally, citizens held provocative banners such as "They occupied Albania", "Vlora has a history of sacrifice, not a price to sell", "Cancel the project" and "Resign".
There were also those with strong irony, showing Edi Rama and Sali Berisha kissing, with the caption "until death do them part."
One of the citizens, who spoke on the improvised podium in front of the Prime Minister's Office premises, said that the people are no longer voting, as they are convinced that there is no future in the country with Edi Rama and Sali Berisha. He said that the end has come for Prime Minister Edi Rama and his government.
Also, one of the strongest voices of the protest held in front of the Prime Minister's Office was that of a resident from Rrjolli, who stated that she has been protesting every day for four months against the construction being carried out in the area where she lives.
She said that the situation in Rrjoll is a consequence of decisions made by state institutions and accused the authorities of supporting private interests. According to her, the ongoing protest is related to opposition to construction projects that affect the properties and territory of the area.
During her speech, the protester requested the intervention of the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) and articulated direct accusations against government representatives.
The main demands of the civic movement were also presented at the rally. According to the organizers, the protest is not only related to the Zvërnec issue, but to a series of laws and decisions that, according to them, have favored investors to the detriment of the public interest.
Protesters demand:
-The resignation of the government;
-Repeal of the law and status related to strategic investments;
-Repeal of the so-called "Mountains Package";
-Cancellation of changes to the law on protected areas;
-Cancellation of changes to the law on cultural heritage.
One of the protesters stated that these demands are not partisan in nature, but aim to protect the public interest, legality, and national assets.
Calls against the government and warning of continued protests
Throughout the rally, anti-government slogans were heard, with one of the most repeated slogans by participants being “Down with the spies .” Organizers called on citizens from all over Albania to join the mobilization, declaring that “the time for silence is over.”
The protest took place under increased security measures in front of the Prime Minister's Office. Organizers have warned that the protests will continue in the coming days if their demands are not taken into consideration by the institutions.
The main demand remains the removal of the fence in Zvërnec and the suspension of the project opposed by the protesters. However, today's protest showed that the dissatisfaction articulated by citizens extends beyond this investment and includes broader opposition to government policies.
