Germany's national football team has decided to cover the costs of public transport for some of its fans during the World Cup. The initiative was announced by the German Football Association (DFB), which explained that the decision aims to ease the financial burden on the team's supporters in the face of rising travel costs during the tournament.
The four-time world champions will pay for bus transport for 600 German fans to attend their final group game against Ecuador on June 25 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, a destination where most fans are expected to travel from New York.
According to BBC reports, the cost of transport to World Cup matches has been the subject of much criticism from fans in recent months. Faced with this situation, Germany captain Joshua Kimmich, along with the rest of the squad, decided to intervene by covering the travel costs of a significant number of supporters.
" Considering the high costs of bus and train travel to New York during the World Cup, the German national team has organized free transportation for 600 fans for the final group stage match ," the German Football Association said in a statement.
The price hikes have been particularly sharp on lines connecting Manhattan to the stadium area. Train fares, which usually cost around $12.90, have soared to $150 during the tournament. After much backlash and controversy, the price was reduced to $98, but even that amount is considered high by fans.
