US President Donald Trump will miss the United States' opening match against Paraguay on Friday. Kicking off their Group D campaign at the 2026 World Cup, the USA and Paraguay face off in Los Angeles on Friday, with the host nation looking to use home-field advantage to claim three points.
Ranked 16th in the world, the USA is now ready for its 12th World Cup, as excitement and tension build ahead of the opening match between South Africa and Mexico on Thursday night.
Trump's tough immigration policies towards fans and even Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan have caused problems even before the tournament began.
This, along with high ticket prices, has caused many people to stay home for this competition, as fans are paying high prices for the beautiful game.
Now, as the US looks to open its campaign with a victory, The Athletic and The Mirror report that Trump will miss the US opener as he seeks to attend the UFC event to be held on June 14.
This comes after the Emir of Qatar attended in 2022, President Vladimir Putin of Russia attended in 2018 and President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil attended in 2014, in what is almost a tradition for host countries.
In the opening match, the USA will face Paraguay at a World Cup for the first time in 96 years, which they won 3-0. Interestingly, Paraguay has won only one of its eight World Cup opening matches to date, while failing to win either of its previous two matches against a host nation, which bodes well for the USA even if their president will not be in attendance.
