Santi Cazorla's story sounds like one of those that movies are made about. The Spanish footballer was one of the most highly regarded of his generation, a member of the national team and an idol at Arsenal. But successive injuries and an infection that almost caused him to lose his leg, ruined his career at its peak.
After years of suffering and surgery, Cazorla decided to play almost exclusively for passion. He left top-flight football and first went to Qatar, then returned to Spain, to join his beloved club, Real Oviedo, in 2023. He did so for free, meaning he was paid the union minimum wage and the proceeds from shirt sales went to the team's academy.
And the 40-year-old legend was the protagonist of an unforgettable night last night. Oviedo was in the play-offs for promotion to La Liga and after winning the first leg 2-1 in Almeria, they were losing 1-0 at home in the return leg. To seek a guarantee of qualification, the coach turned to the bench and the experience of Santi Cazorla, who did not disappoint.
At the start of the second half, he scored a spectacular strike to equalize the score at 1-1 and secure his team's place in the play-off final, bringing them one step closer to a historic return to La Liga.
