Roberto Mancini would rush back to the Italy bench, admits he made a mistake when he suddenly left in August two years ago, only to then go and collect the millions of Saudi national team, and reveals that he has already repaired relations with the president of the Federation Gabriele Gravina - an element that once seemed like an obstacle to his return.
It should be clarified that currently Rino Gattuso really seems one step away from the blue bench, strongly pushed by his sponsor and great friend Gianluigi Buffon, but the words of the technician Mancini are like a heavy stone thrown into calm water.
Mancini runs for Italy two years after leaving
" Regret leaving the national team? Above all, it must be said that if Gravina and I had spoken more in those weeks, even earlier, to clarify some situations, nothing would have happened - explains Mancini to 'Gazzetta dello Sport' - But sometimes the wrong decision is made. It is true that I no longer felt the confidence I had before, but I had to talk to the president: I could have done it, that is my fault. Today, who knows, maybe we would still be together: to try to go to the World Cup. And maybe, after winning the European Championship, to try for the double ."
These are not abstract words. The 60-year-old coach from Jesi – currently free after terminating his contract with the Saudi Federation last October due to below-expected results – launches his candidacy by explaining why he would return to the Italy bench, to replace the sacked Spalletti, and how happy he would be to return:
" I would return because for a coach there is nothing more beautiful than leading the national team: I have won with clubs, but if you win with Italy it is something else. It would be a beautiful challenge, no doubt. And a beautiful risk, yes. But sometimes you have to take some risks, right? I feel a debt to the fans: as I have always said, I would have liked, and I would like, to win a World Cup ."
Mancini reveals conversation with president Gravina
It seems that the Italy dressing room voted for Mancini when asked who they would like as their new coach. The desire is mutual and what once seemed like the main obstacle – namely the broken and irreparable relationship with Gravina – would no longer be a problem, as it has now been overcome privately between the two:
" Today I don't know what will happen and it's not the time to enter into some discussions. But that I made a wrong choice, that I wouldn't do it again, I said months ago, not these last few days. In non-suspicious times, let's say so."
Peace with FIGC president Gravina? "I don't think it would be a problem. We have already met, we have spoken, the president knows that mistakes are made in life. Being in agreement about this is the most important thing, beyond what will happen. Have I heard? Not in the last few days, but it hasn't been long since we last spoke. With my former players? Not after the last two games, but we have never lost touch: we write, especially when they do beautiful things with the clubs. There is an important relationship with them, which will always remain so: for me they are special players, and I believe that I am the same for them ."
