Sandro Tonali and Niccolò Fagioli, among the 13 athletes involved (22 people in total) in the major investigation into illegal betting in football, could avoid the big trial by paying an administrative fine of approximately 250 euros to extinguish the fine, Corriere della Sera reports.
The Milan prosecutor's office has closed its investigation. Prosecutors have not charged the players involved with any match-fixing. None of them sold matches involving them on the pitch, most involved betting on other sports or online poker.
Among the players, only Tonali and Fagioli, who have already served sentences in sports, are also accused in the criminal case of advertising illegal betting or poker platforms.
The other 20 suspects, including Alessandro Florenzi, Nicolò Zaniolo, Mattia Perin, Weston McKennie, Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes, Raoul Bellanova, Samuele Ricci, Matteo Cancellieri, Cristian Buonaiuto, Héctor Junior Firpo and tennis player Matteo Gigante, are accused only of participating in unauthorized gambling.
The law allows suspects to avoid prosecution, as these are misdemeanors punishable by up to three months in prison or a maximum fine of 500 euros.
