Italian-French referee Manuela Nicolosi has shed light on her difficult experiences in the world of refereeing, making harsh accusations about the sexism she has experienced in her career spanning more than two decades.

With over 200 matches refereed at professional levels between men and women, including the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup final and a 2019 UEFA Super Cup final (where she was part of the first all-female team to referee a men's final between Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC), Nicolosi has become one of the most prominent figures in modern refereeing.

However, after all the success, she tells of constant obstacles: "In France, they didn't promote me from Serie C to Serie B because I was too conspicuous."

Also: “All my superiors told me: 'You need to be less visible, you attract too much attention.'”

She adds: "Technical errors or athletic tests are normal things. But if they stop me with the argument 'It's noticeable', then it becomes a problem."

"Yes, I was bullied... but I don't want to talk about it," she declared.

Nicolosi concludes with a clear appeal: "No one should have to choose between personality and career. Every woman has the right to wear whatever she wants – without being hindered professionally."

She reminds young women who dream of a technical role in sports: “Make sure to be yourself. It takes courage, and support among women is crucial.”
