Portuguese professional footballer Ruben Neves has reacted strongly to a Portuguese magazine linking him to Rute Cardoso, the wife of Diogo Jota.
TV Guia magazine published an article on its front page with the headline: “Ruben Neves and Rute United after Death. How Diogo Jota's Widow Relies on His Best Friend.”
The image, taken out of context, was enough to cause a wave of outrage on social media.
"If it were me, like those two, I would sue this filthy magazine. A bunch of idiots who respect nothing and no one," raged one internet user in a message that went viral and was shared more than a million times.
The news came shortly after Neves, who played alongside Diogo at Wolverhampton Wanderers, publicly supported Ruten during the club's tribute to the late Jota, ahead of the Premier League match against Manchester United on August 16, 2025.
Diogo and his brother lost their lives last month after their car went off the road and caught fire on the A-52 motorway in the town of Cernadilla, Zamora province, Spain.
Neves, married to Debora Lourenco for over ten years, commented on the magazine's post on Instagram:
"I have always believed in the good in people, I have been advised not to do so, I have been wrong, and I never wish evil upon anyone.
"The person who put this photo on the front page of the magazine does not deserve to be happy. My wife and I have been together for over 11 years, happy, with a family that makes me proud. We have done our best to help Ruth and her family. The choice of this photo is as unfortunate as the person who chose it and the one who published it," he wrote.
To provide context, Diogo married Rute on June 22, 2025, after a nine-year relationship and an engagement in 2022. They had three children, two sons and a daughter.
