Gennaro Gattuso has been officially introduced as the new coach of Lazio, marking his return to Serie A. The agreement between the parties had been reached for several weeks and only official confirmation from the club was awaited.
" Lazio announces that it has entrusted the task of first team coach to Gennaro Gattuso. The club welcomes the new coach with pleasure, convinced that his experience, professionalism and determination can contribute to achieving the club's sporting objectives, " the club's statement said.
Although the deal was only made official on Tuesday, the agreement between Lazio and Gattuso had been reached some time ago with the coach having made his priorities for the summer transfer window clear; a centre-back, a centre-forward and a striker for his 4-2-3-1 formation. But the condition is that purchases will only be made after the club has sold players. Romagnoli and Ghila are with suitcases in hand and from that moment on, Lazio's transfer window will also be unlocked.
The Italian coach has signed a contract valid for two seasons, while work on building the team for the new edition has begun immediately.
After his last experience with the Italian national team, which was not successful, Gattuso returns to club football to start a new challenge on the Lazio bench.
The 48-year-old also returns to Italian football after four years. His last experience in Serie A was with Napoli, which he managed until 2021.
Meanwhile, Lazio are expected to make new investments during the summer transfer window, with the club looking to strengthen their squad for next season. The capital club is also facing a tense relationship with its fans, some of whom have long boycotted the stadium steps in a sign of dissatisfaction with the club's management.
