Former World Cup winner with Germany, Mats Hummels, has reacted after the "Pants"' disappointing elimination by Paraguay, demanding responsibility from German football leaders and hinting that changes are inevitable.
In an interview with "Magneta TV", Hummels emphasized that the results of recent years require serious reflection.
" On the part of those responsible, there is definitely a need for consequences. I can't say it any other way. We had the European Championship at home, the Nations League at home and this tournament. Looking back, the European Championship at home is still being talked about a lot in terms of sporting performance. The other two tournaments were disappointing. That's why this needs to be addressed. Both by the national coach himself and by the Federation. At least there should be discussions about this, it can't be otherwise. Football is a very competitive sport ."
The former center-back believes that failure could also lead to the departure of several players from the German national team.
" On the players' side, I can imagine that some will withdraw of their own accord. It may also be necessary to make decisions about players who are in their early 30s but who have already missed out on the opportunity to have a good tournament or to achieve important results for Germany in four, five or six tournaments ."
According to Hummels, Germany's problems are not accidental, but have been going on for years.
" For me it's no coincidence that Germany hasn't had a strong tournament since EURO 2016. "
In the end, he emphasized that the main responsibility falls on the players, despite the numerous changes on the bench.
" It all starts with the players, because during this period we have had several different coaches. I expect some of them to say to themselves: 'I will not continue'. But I also expect the current coach, or the one who may come, to make some difficult decisions ."
