Lionel Messi continues to make history at the 2026 World Cup, becoming the tournament's all-time leading scorer, as Argentina secured qualification for the knockout stages after a 2-0 victory over Austria.
The Argentine captain missed a penalty but still scored twice on a memorable evening, extending his World Cup scoring streak to six consecutive matches.
When asked about the historic record and the emotions of the night, the 38-year-old responded in his characteristic style.
"I'm very tired," Messi said with a smile.
The Argentine striker's first goal came after a low cross from Facundo Medina, drawing him level with Brazilian legend Marta on 17 goals in men's and women's World Cups.
However, in extra time Messi scored once more, reaching 18 goals and setting a new absolute record in the history of the tournament.
"I'm very happy with the victory. It was an extremely important victory, a difficult match that we worked hard for. It gives us peace of mind for what awaits us next ," he declared.
The evening could have been even easier for Argentina if Messi had scored from the penalty spot in the first half, but the Argentine veteran praised the team's response after Austria's improved play in the second half.
"To be honest, the way everything ended today was spectacular. I had the penalty that could have increased our advantage, but I'm happy with the result and the team's work ," he added.
Messi, who turns 39 later this week, has already scored five goals at this World Cup, while Argentina have collected six points from two matches in Group J.
Thanks to this success, the world champions have secured passage to the round of 16 with one match still to be played.
