Arsenal's narrow 1-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final has boosted England's position in the UEFA coefficient rankings. The result paves the way for the Premier League to officially secure an additional Champions League place for next season.
England have consistently topped the UEFA rankings this season, with a total of 25,013 points. The gap with second-placed Spain is considerable, putting the Premier League in a favourable position for the allocation of places in European competitions.
All nine English clubs participating in European competitions managed to qualify for the round of 16, recording positive results in both the group stage and the knockout rounds. This performance has been crucial in increasing England's coefficient.
As a result, fifth place in the Premier League standings next season is expected to secure a place in the Champions League.
Liverpool currently hold fifth place with 49 points, while the difference with 13th place, where Bournemouth is ranked, is only 7 points. Between these positions are several teams such as Chelsea, Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Brighton, Sunderland and Newcastle, making the race for the European zone extremely tight.
There are also scenarios that could further increase English representation in the Champions League. If Aston Villa, currently in fourth place, win the Europa League and finish the league in fifth place, England could send six teams to the competition.
A similar situation could also occur if Liverpool win the Champions League and finish outside the top four. If both teams win European trophies and finish in fifth and sixth place, there is a possibility that the seventh-placed team could also qualify for the Champions League.
Current UEFA rankings by coefficients:

Spain – 20,281
