The football world has been shocked by the news of the passing of renowned Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu at the age of 80. Numerous sports figures have expressed their condolences for the loss of one of the most respected names in European coaching.
Amidst the public backlash, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone spoke about his relationship with Lucescu, just before a Champions League match. The Argentine shared memories from the beginning of his career, when he was under the Romanian coach at Pisa in Serie A.
Simeone emphasized the personal connection he had formed with the coach:
" I have a great memory of him, I want to send a message of condolence to the family ," he told Sky.
He recalled the 1990-1991 season, when at the age of 20 he took his first steps in high-level football:
" He would take me to eat at his house and protect me, since I was still a young boy ."
Simeone described Lucescu as a great coach and a man with high human values:
" I have a great memory of both the person and the coach. The numbers speak for themselves. He was a humble man with a heart ."
Mircea Lucescu is considered one of the most successful and influential coaches in European football, with a long career and results that have left their mark in several championships.
