In critical condition for weeks, legend Mircea Lucescu passes away

Mircea Lucescu, one of the most prominent figures in international football, has passed away at the age of 80. He lost his life after a heart attack while hospitalized at the University Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for several days.

According to reports, Lucescu's health problems began during the Romanian national team's training camp ahead of a friendly match against Slovakia, which he was unable to attend. The coach was rushed to the hospital, where he suffered a heart attack on April 3.

His condition worsened in the following days, slipping into a coma two days before he passed away. Despite the doctors' efforts, he did not survive.

His death comes just days after he stepped down as coach of the Romanian national team, following the team's failure to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Lucescu was appointed to this position in August 2024. Earlier, he had received recommendations from doctors in Romania and Belgium to step down due to his health condition.

Known by the nickname "Il Luce", Mircea Lucescu left behind a rich and successful career, winning a total of 37 trophies. He ranks among the most successful coaches in football history, after names like Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola.

The peak of his career was associated with managing Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won eight Ukrainian championship titles and the UEFA Cup in 2009.

In Turkey, he enjoyed success with Galatasaray and Beşiktaş, winning league titles as well as the UEFA Super Cup with Galatasaray in 2000. In his homeland, he won the championship with Dinamo and Rapid Bucharest.

During his long career, Lucescu managed a number of clubs and national teams, including Corvinul, Dinamo Bucharest, Pisa, Brescia, Reggio Emilia, Rapid Bucharest, Inter, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Shakhtar Donetsk, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Dinamo Kiev and the Turkish national team.

One of the most important moments of his career remains his first period in charge of the Romanian national team in the 1980s, when he managed to qualify the team for the 1984 European Championship, marking a historic achievement for the "Tricolors".
