Amid the threat of early elections, accusations of "desertion" and promises of positions, the prime minister is trying to figure out who will leave him alone at the height of the political crisis...
Edi Rama entered today, without any warning, the meeting of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, where he read a text with strong warning tones for the deputies and presented a monitoring plan for their political activity.
The Prime Minister has openly vented his dissatisfaction, stating that not even 10 percent of Socialist Party MPs have been active in what he has described as an open "war" against Albania.
Speaking briefly but firmly, Rama made it known that there is no justification for the fact that the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group has been almost completely passive on social networks, precisely at the moment when, according to him, it should have been on the front line of defending the government.
According to sources, Edi Rama has declared that he is ready to take the country to extraordinary elections within 45 days, if Socialist MPs consider themselves part of the protest demanding the overthrow of the majority.
"In this case," he is reported to have said, "there is only one solution left: to appear before socialist voters again with a completely renewed team."
According to the same sources, Rama added that that team will only include those who want this majority to lead the process of Albania's integration into the European Union.
Although he did not mention any names, he presented a graph according to which about 85 percent of the Parliamentary Group, starting from the secretariat and party leaders, have been indifferent to this political battle.
"This is a desertion," Rama is reported to have said.
He then presented a plan prepared by his communications office, according to which each MP will be obliged to systematically share the Prime Minister's posts, as well as produce videos from the areas where he was elected, to show the communities' support for the government.
The list presented was long.
District by district, the deputies who, according to the prime minister's assessment, have not made even the minimum effort to enter the "trench" of battle have been analyzed.
"Well, the donkey died, but the flies aren't leaving us alone either," Rama is reported to have said, referring to the "neo-villager," who he suspects is not alone within the Parliamentary Group.
In fact, these rumors have been circulating since before Marjana Koçek's departure and after Elisa Spiropali's public positioning.
At that time, there was talk that about 20 Socialist Party deputies were ready to leave the parliamentary group.
But so far this has not happened.
Not even Elisa Spiropali took the step that Marjana Koçeku did, even though her public stances have been much stronger.
This is precisely what seems to have made Edi Rama anxious.
He is trying to provoke the emergence of those he considers "traitors" because he fears that they may act at the height of the crisis or at the moment when international pressure for his removal becomes maximum.
According to the Constitution, even if Edi Rama resigns, early elections are not automatically announced.
If a majority of at least 71 deputies is established in the Assembly and this is communicated to the President of the Republic, a new parliamentary majority can be formed without going to elections.
Even if this does not happen, the prime minister's resignation opens a new political process, where MPs can express themselves more freely, without being under the same political pressure.
The only way for early elections to be announced immediately is if the parliamentary majority itself requests the dissolution of the Assembly.
But even this scenario, according to many observers, could face opposition from international factors.
That's why Rama hasn't used the stick yet.
According to sources, he has stated that in another meeting, very soon, the need for a new government cabinet will be discussed, which according to him should enjoy greater public support.
But in addition to the speech to the group, it is learned that Rama has also held special meetings with those considered "traitor candidates", promising them positions and other political favors.
However, according to the same sources, these "candies" have failed to convince the majority of deputies who have been summoned individually.
For days, a tense atmosphere has prevailed in the Socialist Party.
Even the phrase "firing lists" has begun to circulate among MPs, which, according to sources, was also mentioned during today's meeting.
Although Rama stated that he has no problem leaving power, he added that the most requests for him to stay are not coming from the SP Parliamentary Group, but from "the other wing."
A message that was interpreted as an attempt to imply that he still has the opportunity to secure a parliamentary majority even through the support of MPs outside the Socialist Party.
