From calling to protect nature to warning about corruption, MEPs supported the protesters and urged Rama to listen to citizens.
The 30th day of protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office has received international support today. Six MEPs joined citizens in the square, conveying strong messages against corruption, the destruction of nature and the arrogance of power.
One of the strongest speeches was that of the Vice President of the European Parliament, Nicolae Ștefănuță, who appeared with a turban on his head and recalled the overthrow of the Romanian dictator, Nicolae Ceaușescu.
" Good evening Albania! I am the vice-president of the European Parliament, but I am the son of a shepherd who raised sheep in Romania. I feel at home here, because Albania is our sister nation. I was only 9 years old when I saw Ceausescu fall from power. You had to wait a little longer for Enver Hoxha to fall. But today you no longer have to endure any form of dictatorship. Enough with transition, enough with corruption! ", he said.
Strong messages were also conveyed by MEP Christina Guarda, who said that Albanians are defending their land and rights, while addressing Rama with irony for his condescension to Giorgia Meloni.
" I have an image, the prime minister bowing to my prime minister. You don't enter Europe bowing down, serving anyone. You enter with your head held high, knowing that you deserve it. I am with you, Albania ," she said.
MEP Anna Strolenberg stated that citizens' demands are European values.
" What you are protesting for are European values: protecting nature, fighting corruption, transparency, democracy. I am here to support you. Albania must go to the EU, but Edi Rama must listen ," she said.
Co-chair of the European Greens, Vula Tsetsi, stressed that Albania cannot move towards the EU by selling its assets.
" There is no EU enlargement with Albania if Rama sells the country to foreigners and does not listen to your voice. 90% of you believe in the EU project and we want to honor this. We want the European Commission to put pressure on Rama to give up ," she declared.
German MEP Jutta Paulus said she will take the voices of the protesters to Brussels and revealed that she received an email from Edi Rama asking her not to vote on an amendment in the European Parliament.
" I received an email from Edi Rama telling me not to vote for an amendment, but of course we voted for that amendment, because European law must be in force and it is not for sale either. Continue your battle, we will do our best to support your fight in Brussels ," said Paulus.
Meanwhile, Dutch MEP Tineke Strik guaranteed that the voices of the protesters will be heard in European institutions.
" Solidarity with the Albanian people who are protesting. Continue with the mobilization in protest, your voice will also be expressed in Brussels. We will fight for the same values as the Albanians, for democracy ," she declared.
The presence of the six MEPs at the protest was greeted with applause by citizens, while their main message was common: Albania must move towards Europe with democracy, not with corruption; with citizens, not with oligarchs; with protected nature, not with sold assets. /Pamphlet
