His song became the anthem of the protests, the Iranian singer wins amnesty

An Iranian Grammy Award winner said Monday that he was pardoned from serving a three-year sentence for his song that became the anthem of the 2022 protests for Iranian Mahsa Amini.

Mahsa Amini, also known as Jina Amini, was an Iranian woman who was arrested and later killed in Tehran for opposing the mandatory hijab.

Shervin Hajipour, who was awarded the 2023 Grammy by US First Lady Jill Biden, uploaded a video to Instagram, looking overcome with emotion and saying: "A new order has been issued regarding the amnesty and it included my case".

Two months ago, Hajipour announced that he had been ordered to prison to serve a sentence of three years and eight months, which the court handed down to him in March. He had already served some prison time, but was released on bail in 2023, pending a court decision.

His song, "Baraye", begins with: "For dancing in the street, for the fear we feel when we kiss".

Biden presented Hajipour with a special Grammy Award for New Song of Merit for Social Change during the ceremony last year and declared, "This song became Mahsa Amini's protest anthem, a powerful and poetic call for freedom and women's rights".

Shervin was arrested, but this song continues to resonate around the world with its powerful theme: Women, life, freedom.
