In the church of Sant'Ambrogio in Italy, the wedding of a young couple became one of the most talked-about events, after the parish priest decided to start the wedding ceremony without waiting for the bride, who was still outside the church.
"I had already announced that I would start when the bells rang. It was not possible to keep a whole group of faithful waiting," explained Father Doglio.
The priest, who is said to have been punctual for the first time, did not even wait for the bride for the official 15 minutes and only began the service after three minutes.
"It's not a matter of weddings or baptisms, but respect for those present," the priest declared.
When the service began without the bride, a feeling of embarrassment reportedly spread among the guests, and the atmosphere became even more tense due to the absence of the traditional Ave Maria, which is often sung at weddings.
Correctness as a principle
According to many priests, this is not the first time that Don Doglio has shown a lack of flexibility in matters of schedule. "It is not a matter of marriage or austerity," he declared, "but of respect for those present. Sunday Mass is a sacred moment even for those who are not part of a wedding."
The priest had proposed another time to the couple, to avoid the influx of people, but since he had not received their approval, he had strongly insisted on correctness, even asking them to mark an earlier time on the invitations, to avoid possible delays.
According to some accounts, the bride was outside the church, but was delayed by arranging last-minute details.
