An unusual event occurred at Napoleon Bonaparte Airport in Ajaccio, France, where an Air Corsica Airbus A320 was forced to stay in the air for almost an hour because the sole air traffic controller... was asleep.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday. The plane, arriving from Paris, an hour late, faced a dark runway and a lack of communication from the control tower. The pilots, worried, began circling the Gulf of Ajaccio while seeking help from regional controllers.
According to the local daily Corse Matin, there was only one controller on duty, who was supposed to wait for the plane, but he had fallen asleep. The airport's fire brigade tried several times to contact him, without success, until they notified the gendarmerie. Due to the security doors, entry to the tower was delayed, but the controller was finally found asleep in his office, writes A2 CNN.
After being woken up, he turned on the runway lights and cleared the plane to land. The flight captain, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he did not panic and that passengers took the situation in good humor.
The controller was tested for alcohol and drugs, but came back clean. However, the incident has sparked a major debate in France, where controllers' unions have repeatedly warned that staff shortages and difficult working conditions create fatigue and a serious risk to air safety.
