Democratic Party MP, Ina Zhupa, has reacted to the tensions recorded during the protest held in front of the Parliament, criticizing the manner in which the State Police intervened against the protesters.
Through a post on social media, Zhupa recalled the episode that occurred at the end of May in Zvërnec, where a protester against investment in the area was dragged away by private guards. According to her, the footage of today's protest resembles that event, while she raised the question of whether there is a difference between the behavior of the police and the people who used violence in that case.
"What makes these police officers different from the bandits of the private firm in Zvërnec, who committed violence against citizens? If one uses a company uniform and the other a state uniform, but both attack defenseless people who are protesting. Where is the difference?", writes Zhupa.
The Democratic MP claims that the police intervention was disproportionate and that protest is a constitutional right that must be protected.
"For a few eggs thrown in protest, the State Police chose to respond with punches, kicks, dragging and violence against citizens. The images are shocking and unacceptable in a democratic state. Protest is a constitutional right. The police have the obligation to guarantee order, not to retaliate against citizens," her reaction continues.
Zhupa also states that using force against protesters is not a solution and that, according to her, governments that choose repression over dialogue lose the support of citizens.
"When unjustified force is used to intimidate anyone who raises their voice against the government, then we are dealing with a criminal police force that serves the government and not the state. Neither violence, nor fear, nor repression will prolong the life of a government that has lost the trust of its citizens. History has shown that any government that chooses force instead of dialogue brings its end closer," Zhupa concludes.
