Oil price increase, Alimehmeti: It is not the market that decides, but the

The increase in fuel and food prices is not only a consequence of international factors, but is also related to internal governance problems. This was stated by the head of the Health Department in the Democratic Party, Ilir Alimehmeti, who emphasized that the current situation has been created over the years.

According to him, the war in Ukraine is being used as an excuse to cover up domestic failures. "The war causes a confusion of things, but this is not enough as an excuse for the government to increase prices," he declared.

Alimehmeti stressed that the price of oil in Albania has been historically high and does not follow market logic. "We have always had oil the most expensive in all of Europe. Even when the euro is at historic records... oil never went down," he said, adding that prices did not go down even when the euro fell to low levels.

He argued that the market is influenced by narrow interests and not by normal economic mechanisms. “It does not follow market norms… but the interests of a handful of people,” declared Alimehmeti.

According to him, the same situation is reflected in food prices, which are related to the lack of domestic production and weak agricultural policies. "You can't blame the war alone for the increase in vegetable prices," said Alimehmeti.

He also highlighted the lack of support for agriculture and the consequences of unaddressed natural disasters. “If you don't have ongoing subsidies in agriculture, you can't just blame it on the war,” Alimehmeti said.

In conclusion, he linked the situation to a broader governance problem. "Prices are primarily related to misgovernance," Alimehmeti told "Syri TV."
