On the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Socialist Party, in a long speech he delivered at the ceremony held in "Italia" Square, Prime Minister Edi Rama brought attention to his work as mayor of Tirana.
Rama listed some of what he considered his successes in environmental protection, even though he identifies himself as the mayor and then Prime Minister who concreted Tirana.
Referring to his work as mayor, Rama said that he left behind 55,000 decorative trees, planted with difficulty, according to him, as kiosks and unauthorized constructions had to be demolished.
During his speech, Rama said that the difference between him and the protesters is not as great as it may seem from the outside, emphasizing that since the beginning of his engagement in state institutions, he has worked to improve the environment and public spaces.
The Prime Minister brought to attention the period when he headed the Municipality of Tirana, recalling the state of the capital about two decades ago. According to him, at that time the city had more trees cut down than planted, while most of the trees seen on the streets of Tirana today are the result of the work of the administration of that period.
"When I left the mayor's office, I left behind 55,000 decorative tree roots," Rama declared, adding that many of today's trees were once seedlings planted in difficult conditions and amid opposition that accompanied the actions to free up public spaces.
He also mentioned interventions on the Lana River, where according to him 123 thousand tons of concrete have been removed from the slopes, as part of projects for urban rehabilitation and environmental improvement.
Following the statement, Rama said that his experience in leading institutions has shown him that every effort for change and development is accompanied by opposition. Referring to the writer Faik Konica, he quoted the phrase: "Be patient, because Albanians have a habit of opposing without being informed."
The Prime Minister's statements come at a time when debates over urban development and environmental protection continue to remain at the center of public discussion.
